Premises licence for gambling
You need a premises licence if you wish to operate:
- a casino
- a bingo hall
- an adult gaming centre
- a family entertainment centre
- a betting shop
- a betting track
A premises licence can only be issued for one premises at a time, though a licence may authorise several different types of gambling. Racetracks may require more than one premises licence if the licence only covers part of the track.
To hold a premises licence for gambling, you must:
- be at least 18 years old
- have a legal right to occupy the premises
- have applied for or been granted an operating licence from the Gambling Commission that allows you to carry out the proposed activity – for example, applicants for an adult gaming centre premises licence must have applied for or been granted a gaming machine general AGC operator's licence.

You must publish a copy of the notice (doc, 13 KB) in a local newspaper and display the notice at the premises. You will need to provide a copy of the premises licence application to the Licensing Authority, the Gambling Commission, Chief Officer of Police, department that deals with matters for the protection of children from harm and Her Majesty's Commissioners of Customs and Excise.

You can apply to vary a condition of an existing premises licence, such as to change the opening hours or add a new licensable activity to the licence.

You can apply to reinstate a premises licence if the previous licence has lapsed due to the death, incapacity or insolvency of the holder. You will need to apply within six months of the date that the licence lapsed. If your application is successful, you will become the new licence holder.
